This new installment picks up with five friends whose lives are changed forever after a tragic car accident. Terrified of the consequences, they make a pact to keep it a secret. But secrets don’t stay buried for long. A year later, someone is stalking them—someone who knows exactly what they did. As the terror escalates, the group realizes this isn’t the first time the nightmare has unfolded. Desperate for answers, they seek out the only two survivors of the original Southport Massacre.

At the helm of this iconic slasher reboot of I Know what You Did Last Summer is writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who brings both personal nostalgia and a fresh cinematic vision to the project.

“The original was the first R-rated movie I ever snuck into,” Robinson recalls. “My babysitter wanted to see it, and I ended up going with her. Afterwards, my mom got really angry, but I didn’t care because I was so mesmerized by it.”
That early experience clearly stuck with her. Now, she’s taking on the challenge of updating a beloved horror franchise while keeping its spirit intact.
“I wanted the film to be big, brash, and scary, but also retain the crackly fun, clever, witty vibe of the first movie,” says Robinson. “We made certain that Kevin Williamson’s amazing tone was present, while making sure to offer a fresh take. I think the tone rides that perfect line between modern horror and throwback summer slasher.”
And at the heart of the story is a theme that hits close to home for many: human error. One bad decision leads to another, and before you know it, you're in too deep.
“This movie is about people making a mistake, then making the wrong choice, and the consequences that follow,” Robinson explains. “It’s a deeply human story. Anyone could mess up like our characters do. That’s what sucks you into the story, because you’re thinking, what would I do in this situation? For me, horror is most interesting when it’s grounded in very real stakes.”
With a talented cast, a director who grew up on the original, and an updated take that blends nostalgic terror with modern relevance, I Know What You Did Last Summer is poised to thrill longtime fans and new audiences alike.
