Luc Besson’s Dracula: A Love Tale. Earlier this year, the film world buzzed with excitement as news broke that renowned director Luc Besson would helm a new Dracula movie titled Dracula: A Love Tale. This “big-budget reimagining” promises to offer epic and spectacular set pieces, blending Besson’s visionary style with the timeless legend of Dracula. The upcoming horror movie, now several months into production, is set to wrap up this month.
Luc Besson: The Visionary Director

Luc Besson, a true auteur, has carved a unique niche in the film industry. The French writer, director, and producer is celebrated for his work on films like Léon: The Professional, Lucy, and Subway. His fascination with the ocean, stemming from his upbringing with scuba-diver parents, is evident in films like The Big Blue and Atlantis. Besson is also a key figure in the French Cinéma du look movement, with films like Nikita showcasing his distinctive style. However, he is perhaps most popular for his spectacular sci-fi creations such as The Fifth Element and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
The idea for Dracula: A Love Tale sparked while Besson and Jones were on the set of Dogman. Eager to collaborate again, Besson began crafting his unique take on the Dracula story. He told Deadline that Jones’s talent is unparalleled, reminiscent of Gary Oldman’s brilliance. “He’s crazily talented. It’s something I haven’t seen since Gary Oldman. On a human level, he’s a gem, kind, lovely… there’s no entourage, no agents and assistants in tow,” Besson remarked. This project marks Besson's most inspired collaboration since working with Jean Reno, with whom he made six movies.
A Love Story Across Time and Space
The horror film Dracula: A Love Tale diverges from traditional Dracula narratives by infusing a poignant love story. The film follows Dracula as he connects with a woman in Belle Epoque Paris who bears a striking resemblance to his beloved wife, Elisabeta, who died in mid-15th century Transylvania. According to legend, Elisabeta’s suicide drove Romanian ruler Prince Vlad III (the historical inspiration for Dracula) to renounce God and embrace a life as a vampire.
The film's narrative spans across different times and places, from Dracula’s castle in the Transylvanian Mountains to Belle Epoque Paris. This Parisian setting substitutes Bram Stoker’s original UK locations of Whitby and London. The Paris scenes are set against the backdrop of the city gearing up to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution on July 14, 1989.
Caleb Landry Jones stars as Dracula, supported by a talented cast including Zoë Bleu as Elisabeta and her 1989 look-alike Mina, Matilda De Angelis as Mina’s best friend, and Christoph Waltz as a vampire-hunting priest on Dracula’s trail.
A New Chapter in the Dracula Legacy

With Dracula: A Love Tale, Luc Besson aims to bring a fresh perspective to the Dracula mythos. By intertwining a love story with historical and fantastical elements, the film promises to be both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. As production nears completion, anticipation builds for what could be one of the most intriguing and original takes on the Dracula legend in recent memory.
